Badminton Pan America

Yesterday marked the start of the 11th edition of the Para-Badminton World Championships, taking place from November 22 to 26 at the Dong Chung Gymnasium in Uslan, Korea. This year’s championship is the biggest in history, with 268 athletes from 41 countries competing in 22 events.

Representing our continent are athletes from Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. Additionally, Tatiana Merino from Chile and a representative from Canada are participating in the Classifier Workshop, while Federico Valdez, Jeff Bell, and Enrique Charadán from Peru, Canada, and Cuba respectively, are attending the Workshop for Referees and Technical Delegates. The Cuban referee, Miguel León, is also present.

Our athletes had an outstanding first day. Marcelo Alves Conceicao and Pilar Jauregui from Brazil and Peru, respectively, won their XD WH1-2 event against Italians Yuri Ferrigno and Marcela Li Brizzi with a score of 21-5, 21-6. They also triumphed in their second match against Stephen Duran (FRA) and Esther Torres (SPA), scoring 24-22, 21-9.

Giuliana Poveda from Peru and Niall Mcveigh from Ireland emerged victorious in all three matches they played. They defeated Alexander Mekhdiev (RUS) and Deidre Nagle (SCO) with a score of 21-12, 21-10 in their first XD SS6 event. In the second match, they beat Paul Doling (ENG) and Randika Doling (SRI) with a score of 21-4, 21-6. Lastly, they triumphed over the Indian couple Raja Magotra and Ruhi Satish Shingade, scoring 21-12, 21-5.

In the MS SL4 event, Raul Anguiano from Guatemala defeated Hugo Saumier from France with a score of 10-21, 21-12, 21-17. Giuliana Poveda from Peru won against Yasmina Eissa from Egypt in the WS SS6 event, scoring 21-13, 21-14. Pascal La Pointe from Canada emerged victorious against Bobby Griffin from England, scoring 21-13, 21-17 in the MS SL4 event. Pilar Jauregui from Peru defeated Tatiana Greeva from Russia with a score of 21-15, 23-21 in the WS WH2 event.

On the second day of the competition, Marcelo Alves Conceicao and Pilar Jauregui continued their winning streak, defeating the Israeli couple Amir Levi and Nina Gorodetzky with a score of 21-15, 13-21, 21-13 in the XD WH1-2. Marcelo Alves Conceicao also won his match against Michael Smith from Ireland with a score of 21-0, 21-2 in the MS WH1 event. Giuliana Poveda from Peru and Niall Mcveigh from Ireland beat Mark Joseph Dharmai from India and Maria Bartusz from Poland with a score of 22-20, 21-13 in the XD SS6 event. Pilar Jauregui from Peru emerged victorious against Spanish player Esther Torres, with a score of 21-14, 21-10 in the WS WH2 event.
