Badminton Pan America

Growing Up Years

I was born in the rural parish of St Andrew in Barbados as the last of 13 children. It was during a PE lesson in secondary school when I first laid eyes on badminton. The sport immediately caught my attention, seeming easy and interesting to play compared to others. Recognizing my potential, the games master introduced me to the badminton coach who taught me the basics and paved the way for my journey in the junior national program.

My Passion for Badminton

Representing Barbados at the regional championships (CAREBACO) in 1985 at the age of 14 fueled my passion for badminton. I even took a coaching course during my first year at the senior level. While I ended my competitive stage at 35, I decided to focus on coaching beginners, sharing my love for the sport.

Memorable Events

Participating in the regional championships and Pan Am Games brought me numerous medals and unforgettable experiences. Winning gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in Guatemala in 1993 remains one of my most rewarding memories. Throughout my badminton journey, I have made friends from all walks of life who I can turn to for guidance or simply enjoy a friendly conversation.

Badminton’s Impact

Thanks to badminton, I secured a coaching job at the National Sports Council (NSC) where I teach the sport at primary and secondary schools across Barbados. Working with the junior developmental program, national junior squad, and my club’s junior program is also incredibly fulfilling.
