Connie Moreno: A Unique Journey into Badminton

Connie Moreno, a lawyer and public accountant, found her way into the world of badminton in a rather unconventional manner. Today, she serves as a valuable member of the Colombia Badminton Federation Executive Committee. Let’s dive deeper into her story.

A Different Path to Badminton

With a specialization in Sports Management, Connie not only chairs the Women in Badminton program of Badminton Pan Am but also holds the position of General Secretary in the Colombia Badminton Federation. Surprisingly, Connie had no previous involvement in the sport before. Her encounter with badminton came about through her professional career.

“Unlike other women who have a background in sports, either as athletes or coaches, I was not an athlete myself. I discovered badminton later in life. I initially entered the sports sector by providing legal, administrative, and financial advice as an external agent for Colombian sports federations and the non-profit organization known as Colombia Sports Foundation. Through my involvement in these areas, I gained a fresh perspective on how federations should operate, covering technical, administrative, financial, and legal aspects. This opened up an opportunity for me to take on a management role in the Colombian Federation of Badminton and the presidency of the Colombia Sports Foundation.”

Connie previously served as the president of the Colombia Badminton Federation from 2014 to 2017. With a strong commitment to the development of Colombian badminton, she decided to continue contributing to the Federation.

Making a Difference through Badminton

Given her continued involvement, it is no surprise that Connie’s years in badminton have been rewarding both professionally and personally.

“Badminton has not only provided me with pleasant experiences but has also helped me grow both professionally and personally. It has pushed me to overcome my fears and allowed me to connect with individuals involved in badminton worldwide, forging strong friendships. Most importantly, it has allowed me to enhance the quality of life for children living in vulnerable areas of Colombia, offering them an alternative through their engagement with badminton.”

Connie recognizes the significance of sports in her country’s development. Her ongoing goal is to expand the reach of badminton in Colombia, promoting growth in terms of athlete participation and technical/administrative involvement.

Overcoming Challenges

Connie’s journey has not been without its share of difficulties. Breaking into the sports sector proved to be a challenge. However, with determination and step-by-step progress, she managed to rise to leadership within the Federation.

“Every leadership position, be it president or general secretary, carries immense responsibility. Since I had no prior knowledge or experience in the sports sector, I had to adapt to an entirely new system. Through support and my eagerness to learn, I trained myself to become proficient in sports management, ultimately assuming a leadership role within the Federation.”
