Beiwen Zhang’s determination has paid off as she has received an invitation to the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals. This opportunity arose after He Bingjiao from China declined her own invitation due to injury. Zhang will join Canada’s Michelle Li as the two singles players from Pan Am who have qualified for the season finale.

Tai Tzu Ying (Chinese Taipei)

The talented Tai Tzu Ying has continued to dominate Women’s Singles for the second consecutive year. With an impressive record of winning five out of six finals in the first half of the year, Tai’s game seemed unbeatable. Although she faced a quarterfinal exit at the World Championships, she quickly bounced back to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. Despite a slight slump in Japan and China, Tai reached three more finals and claimed titles in Chinese Taipei and France.

Nozomi Okuhara (Japan)

Nozomi Okuhara has shown signs of returning to her World Championships-winning form of 2017. Although she has not reached her peak performance, Okuhara has made five World Tour finals and emerged victorious in three of them, including Thailand, Korea, and Hong Kong.

Akane Yamaguchi (Japan)

Akane Yamaguchi has had a solid season, making it to at least the semi-finals in eight events. She showcased her skills by winning the German Open and the French Open. Yamaguchi also enjoyed victories over her close rival and compatriot Nozomi Okuhara in Germany and Indonesia.

Chen Yufei (China)

This year marked Chen Yufei’s breakthrough as she secured her first major title. With a steady game under pressure, Chen emerged as the top Women’s Singles player in China. She reached five finals, winning the Fuzhou China Open by defeating Carolina Marin in the semi-finals and Nozomi Okuhara in the final.

Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand)

Ratchanok Intanon had an off season compared to her previous standards. Although she started the year strong with a win at the Malaysia Masters and semi-final appearances in Indonesia and India, her form started to decline. However, she showed a glimmer of her past success by finishing as a runner-up at the Hong Kong Open. Will her performance at the Hong Kong Open mark a turning point for her?

Pusarla V Sindhu (India)

It was a year of near-misses for Pusarla V Sindhu, as she faltered in four finals. Despite reaching the final in India, she couldn’t convert her match point and lost to Beiwen Zhang. She also faced tough opponents in the form of Carolina Marin, Nozomi Okuhara, and Tai Tzu Ying in other finals. Pusarla will be hoping for better luck at the season finale after finishing as a runner-up last year.

Michelle Li (Canada)

Michelle Li has played an impressive 24 events this year, the highest among the top singles players. After facing a series of first-round losses, she finally struck gold by winning the Macau Open. This victory boosted her rankings and secured her a spot in the season finale for the first time in her career. Li’s wins over notable players like Busanan Ongbamrungphan, Sayaka Sato, and Ratchanok Intanon this year have proven her ability to challenge higher-ranked players at the World Tour Finals.

Beiwen Zhang (USA)

Beiwen Zhang’s inspiring journey has made her one of the most remarkable stories in badminton. Despite a lack of support, she has risen to become World No.12. Zhang’s notable performances this year include her victory over Pusarla in the India Open final and runner-up finishes at the US Open and Korea Open. Her tireless and determined spirit earned her an invitation to the World Tour Finals, following the withdrawals of Carolina Marin and He Bingjiao due to injury.
