Badminton Pan America: Empowering Future Leaders in Bolivia

A recent three-day youth leadership workshop titled “Aprediendo A Enseñar Badminton” (Learning to Teach Badminton) in Bolivia has laid the foundation for a new generation of young leaders in the sport. Held in the vibrant city of Sucre Chuquisaca from July 3-5, 2023, the workshop aimed to develop the sport of badminton in the country.

Motivating Young Minds

The workshop saw the participation of twenty students, aged between 16 and 17, from two schools – la Unidad Educativa Luis Boeto and la Unidad Educativa Guido Villagómez. It’s worth noting that the majority of the participants were female. Out of the twenty students, sixteen successfully completed the workshop and received their certificates. Cindy Avendaño Montes, the National Coordinator of the Bolivian Badminton Federation, led the workshop.

Despite badminton being a relatively lesser-known sport in Bolivia, the students displayed great enthusiasm in understanding and learning the sport. Some initially shy students were provided with necessary support to boost their confidence and actively participate. The organizers keenly observed the participants, looking for potential future leaders within the group.

The workshop adhered to the guidelines outlined in the Shuttle Time manuals, with a focus on effective teaching techniques that encouraged interaction among all participants. To conclude the workshop, a small tournament was organized, and prizes were awarded to the students. The excitement and motivation generated by this event led to several students joining the Sucre badminton team.

Force Multipliers

The main objective of the workshop was to identify and nurture future leaders, thus strengthening the organization and promoting early age learning and preparation. By doing so, the Bolivian Badminton Federation aims to establish a solid foundation for the sport’s growth within the community.

The federation’s mission to promote badminton education in Bolivia is driven by the goal of developing young leaders. These leaders, once trained in teaching, will become catalysts for knowledge dissemination, capable of teaching various activities and fortifying the badminton community in Bolivia.

Positive Impact

The workshop had a positive impact, not only on the participating students but also in attracting more people to the sport. Araceli Liceras Taboada, one of the student-athletes, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I enjoyed the workshop immensely. Badminton is an inclusive sport, and through it, we also learn Olympic values. I will continue striving to learn more and grow as an athlete, coach, or technical official in Bolivia. Thank you to the organizers for this initiative.”
