Mary Margaret Wilson Shines at Uganda Para-Badminton International 2018

Mary Margaret Wilson, the talented Scotswoman, is on track to win three gold medals as the Uganda Para-Badminton International 2018 comes to a close in Lugogo, Kampala. Wilson’s exceptional performance in Women’s Doubles SL 3 – SU 5 has secured her a spot at the top of the standings. Paired with Elizabeth Mwesigwa, Wilson dominated the round-robin competition at MTN Arena, defeating Ugandan team-mates Khadija Khamuka and Rose Nansereko (21-19 21-5) in their final match. The category, which had only five pairs, used a group format instead of a knockout format.

Wilson continues to impress in Women’s Singles SL 4 + SU 5, breezing past Kenya’s Asha Kipwene Munene. In the final, she will face Khamuka, who overcame Ghana’s Zinabu Issah (21-15 21-12). Additionally, Wilson, alongside Guillaume Gailly, secured a spot in the gold-medal match for Mixed Doubles SL 3 – SU 5 with a comfortable 21-9 21-16 victory over c(India)/Lilian Namarome (Uganda). The duo will compete against Nigeria’s Rafio Oyebanji Bello and Chinyere Lucky Okoro for the title.

The tournament has been a great success for Okoro, who expressed her gratitude for her strong performance: “I came to play and learn more. I have been playing for six months and I am making good progress. I played 11 matches here and won nine so far. I appreciate God giving me the strength to do so well.” Okoro will also compete against her Women’s Doubles partner, Ijeoma Gift Chukwuemeka, for the Women’s Singles SL 3 crown.

In the Men’s Doubles SL 3 – SL 4 category, Bello and his partner Chukwuebuka Sunday Eze secured a spot in the final after an impressive comeback against Frenchman Gailly and Emmanuel Pinochet Amougui of Cameroon (18-21 21-6 21-9). They will face India’s Sukant Kadam and Umesh Vikram Kumar for a chance at the gold. Bello, who has also been coaching at the event, expressed his determination to perform better in the finals, learning from his previous matches.

The wheelchair events have also been captivating, with the top two seeds, Madzlan Saibon (Malaysia) and Amir Levi (Israel), set to compete for the Men’s Singles WH 2 title. In the Women’s Singles WH 2 category, Akosua Nkansah from Ghana is confident in her abilities after attending the African Para-Badminton Legacy Project. She will face Asiya Mohammed Sururu of Kenya in the final.

The tournament has seen impressive performances from various players, with early celebrations for Malaysian duo Cheah Liek Hou and Hairol Fozi Saaba in Men’s Doubles SU 5, as well as Sanjeev Kumar from India and Richard Perot from France in Men’s Doubles WH 1 – WH 2.
