News | BWF World Championships

Rajiv Ouseph, one of Europe’s most accomplished men’s singles players, recently announced his retirement from international competition after his loss at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2019. Ouseph, the 2017 European champion and former world No.10, fell to Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in a hard-fought match.

Despite trailing in the second game, Ouseph made a valiant effort to narrow the gap and came within one point of victory. However, Christie proved to be too strong, ultimately securing the win.

In a statement, Ouseph explained his decision to retire, citing various factors such as starting a new family and physical limitations. He also expressed his belief that it was time for younger players like Toby Penty to take the spotlight, especially with the upcoming Olympics.

Reflecting on his career, Ouseph expressed satisfaction with his achievements. He acknowledged the challenges faced by English singles players in recent years and took pride in bringing success to his country, particularly winning the European Championships in 2017.

In other matches, top-seeded players such as Chen Long, Kento Momota, Anthony Ginting, Kenta Nishimoto, and Lee Zii Jia advanced to the next round with comfortable wins. Notably, Lee Zii Jia delivered a solid performance against Ygor Coelho, earning a well-deserved victory.
