News | BWF World Championships

Seventh seed Ratchanok Intanon faced a challenging match against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2019. Tunjung’s impressive strokeplay kept Intanon on the edge throughout the first two games. Intanon found herself with two match points against her in the second game but managed to turn the game around with a remarkable cross net shot, saving the match point.

Once Intanon found her momentum, there was no stopping her. Tunjung’s morale slipped, and Intanon secured a 18-21 23-21 21-10 victory. In the quarterfinals, Intanon would be facing unseeded Singaporean Yeo Jia Min, who continued her fairytale run with a hard-fought 21-15 14-21 21-16 win over Vu Thi Trang.

Sai Praneeth was clinical in his defeat of Ginting.

It was a disappointing session for Indonesia as men’s singles sixth seed Anthony Ginting and mixed doubles pairs Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja and Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti were also eliminated from the competition.

Ginting had a promising start in his match against Sai Praneeth, but Praneeth’s resilience paid off. Praneeth mentioned, “I played some good matches in Japan and Thailand, so I was confident and the draw wasn’t too tough or too easy, so I thought I have to be at 100 percent.” Praneeth’s victory secured his fourth quarterfinal appearance this year.

Liao Min Chun and Su Ching Heng of Chinese Taipei.

Another notable result was the defeat of men’s doubles eighth seeds Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen by 13th seeds Liao Min Chun/Su Ching Heng. The Chinese Taipei duo secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 21-19 12-21 21-17 victory. This marked only their second quarterfinal appearance this year, the first being at the Australian Open.
