Irish Para-Badminton International 2019: A Triumph for Krysten Coombs

News | BWF Olympics

Ireland proved to be a fortunate location for Krysten Coombs, an English badminton player. Coombs secured his first international title since Dublin two years ago, propelling himself up the Race To Tokyo rankings. He emerged victorious in the men’s singles Short Stature (SS6) category at the FZ Forza Irish Para-Badminton International 2019.

Coombs faced a challenging match against Nagar Krishna of India, the current top-ranked player this season. After losing the first game, Coombs roared back with determination, winning the match 16-21, 21-19, 21-8. Coombs shared his emotional response to the victory, stating, “I feel emotional. It was this time two years ago that I last won an international tournament. And to beat Nagar, the best player in the world right now, it’s a lot to take in.”

Coombs had come close to claiming the title in Dubai, but was defeated by Nagar in a thrilling match. This time, however, Coombs seized the opportunity and closed it out in style. He expressed his joy, saying, “I came close in Dubai. So, to have made this one count is amazing. It’s massive. I have had a good start to the year and it could have been even better if not for the injury in Canada.”

The FZ Forza Irish Para-Badminton International 2019 also saw another outstanding performance from Indonesia’s Leani Ratri Oktila. She secured her second triple crown of the season, adding to her already impressive tally of 10 titles in 2019. Oktila, partnered with Hary Susanto, continued their intense rivalry with Lucas Mazur and Faustine Noel in the mixed doubles (SL3-SU5) category. After a fierce battle lasting 54 minutes, Oktila and Susanto emerged victorious with a score of 16-21, 21-16, 21-10.

In the aftermath of the match, Noel expressed frustration, acknowledging that they were getting closer to their opponents but struggled to maintain their advantage. Despite the setback, Noel stated, “More work is needed, and we will be back fighting for the World Championships.”

Dheva Anrimusthi, also from Indonesia, demonstrated exceptional skill and remained undefeated in the men’s singles Standing Upper (SU5) category, winning four out of the five events he has participated in so far. He displayed his prowess by defeating Bartłomiej Mroz of Poland with a score of 14-21, 21-10, 21-12. Anrimusthi also added a third men’s doubles SU5 title of the season, partnering with Hafizh Briliansyah Prawiranegara.

The competition also witnessed a fierce battle between Korean legend Kim Jung Jun and Chan Ho Yuen of Hong Kong in the men’s singles Wheelchair (WH1) category. Kim Jung Jun emerged victorious in straight games, reclaiming the top spot.
