Badminton Pan America

I had the incredible opportunity to delve into the world of badminton as a young child, growing up in the beautiful rural parish of St Andrew in Barbados. With badminton courts catching my eye during a PE lesson at the age of 11, I instantly found myself drawn to this sport that seemed both easy and captivating to play. Little did I know that this initial encounter would ignite a lifelong passion for badminton.

Discovering the Sport

As I marveled at the badminton courts, I quickly caught the attention of the games master, who recognized my potential and introduced me to the dedicated badminton coach. Under his guidance, I learned the basics of the sport and began my journey into the junior national program. This pivotal moment not only shaped my future in badminton but also opened doors to new opportunities.

Growth and Achievements

As I represented Barbados at the regional championships, CAREBACO, in Guyana at the age of 14, my love for badminton continued to flourish. This passion led me to complete a coaching course during my first year at the senior level. Over the years, I had the privilege of participating in various competitions, including the Pan Am Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC), where I was honored to win gold alongside my partner, Argyle Maynard, in Guatemala in 1993.

These experiences remain etched in my memory, not only for the thrill of victory but also for the lasting friendships forged with people from all walks of life. The badminton community has become a source of support and inspiration, whether it be for coaching advice or simply enjoying friendly conversations.

The Impact of Badminton

Thanks to badminton, I was fortunate to secure a coaching job at the National Sports Council (NSC), allowing me to teach the sport at primary and secondary schools throughout Barbados. Working with young athletes in the junior developmental program, the national junior squad, and my club’s junior program has been truly rewarding.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey in badminton has been the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives. Through this sport, I have witnessed transformative changes in individuals, as they gain confidence, see the world, and embrace new possibilities.

Empowering PE Teachers with Shuttle Time

The introduction of the Shuttle Time program has been a game-changer in promoting badminton at the grassroots level. PE teachers now have the resources and knowledge to include badminton in their day-to-day classes, contributing to the development of the sport from an early age.
