Badminton Pan America: Celebrating Women in Sport

Badminton Pan America

Delia Valenzuela, an integral part of the BWF Shuttle Time program at the continental level, has dedicated several years to the development of badminton in the region. She highly values the opportunities our sport has provided for her personal and professional growth.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Badminton Pan Am is honoring outstanding women in our sport with a series of interviews throughout the month of March. Join us in celebrating The Pan Am Women’s Month.

Discovering Badminton at University

Delia’s journey with badminton began during her time as a student at university. Gradually, she became more involved in the sport, starting as a badminton promoter and eventually becoming the Development Assistant of Badminton Pan Am Confederation.

“I first encountered badminton at a workshop for badminton promoters organized by the Peruvian badminton federation during my university years. There, I met Mrs. Pilar Carrillo and Mr. German Valdez. At first, badminton intimidated me, but by the end of the course, I found it incredibly fun. Encouraged by the federation, I took the responsibility to promote the sport at my university. We organized an exhibition with their support.”

A Journey to Pan American Badminton Confederation

Over the years, Delia’s commitment and dedication led her to the Pan Am Badminton Confederation. Prior to this, she was associated with the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) and gained valuable experience in the development of various sports. Her expertise and performance opened doors and provided opportunities, including her involvement with the Pan-American badminton family.

“After working at the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), where I frequently met Mrs. Pilar Carrillo through the Peruvian Badminton Federation, destiny brought me to Cuzco. It was during my time there that I received calls and got in touch with Mr. German Valdez, who informed me of a job opportunity within the Pan-American Confederation. I accepted the offer and traveled from Cuzco to Lima to become part of the Confederation, where I continue to thrive today.”

Breaking Barriers and Embracing Diversity

The environment we inhabit shapes our character and influences our interactions. Delia has experienced this firsthand and has gradually broken down barriers that prevented her from fully embracing new experiences and forming connections. Through badminton, she has had the privilege to work with individuals from different countries, broadening her horizons and extending her circle of friends.

“I used to be quite self-conscious and shy. However, working with people from diverse backgrounds has revealed that we are all essentially the same. I was once fearful, but not anymore. This cultural exchange has inspired me to be more open and has allowed me to meet new people without imposing unnecessary barriers.”

Embracing Opportunities and Overcoming Fears

Like Delia, many people limit themselves and miss out on life’s opportunities due to various fears. Delia’s personal journey serves as an inspiration for women to conquer their fears, take steps forward, and try again, as it is through persistence that we achieve personal growth.

“Let’s take that leap of faith. We may stumble along the way, but new opportunities will arise, allowing us to learn from our mistakes and evolve as individuals.”

“I am thankful to Mrs. Pilar and Mr. German for having the confidence in me to be part of the Pan American Confederation team. I am also grateful to the entire Badminton Pan Am team, who share the same passion for our sport. Together, we exchange knowledge and create better activities for the badminton community.”
