Para-Badminton Worlds 2017 to Korea

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has chosen the City of Ulsan in Korea as the host for the 11th BWF Para-Badminton World Championships. This exciting announcement comes as badminton prepares for its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The BWF Council, currently gathering in Bilbao, congratulated the Korea Badminton Association for the Disabled (KBAD) for their successful bid, which promises to provide a world-class experience for para-badminton athletes from around the globe.

Korea’s Strong Bid

The BWF President, Poul-Erik Høyer, expressed his appreciation for the two comprehensive bids received, acknowledging the National Paralympic Committee of China and KBAD for their commitment to organizing a magnificent event. Høyer noted that the City of Ulsan demonstrated exceptional public and community engagement, solidifying its position as an ideal host for the Championships.

Korea has a proven track record of successfully hosting para-badminton events. In 2009, Seoul welcomed the Para-Badminton World Championships, followed by the Asian Para-Badminton Championships in Yeon Ju-Gun in 2012 and the 2014 Asian Para-Championships in Incheon. These events showcased Korea’s strong technical capabilities while enjoying tremendous support from the local community.

Growing International Participation

The previous edition of the Para-Badminton World Championships, held in Stoke Mandeville, England, attracted 232 athletes from 35 nations, who competed in 22 medal events. As the host for the 2017 Championships, Ulsan City expects an even larger turnout of athletes from a wider range of countries. The best para-badminton players from around the world will converge in Ulsan City this November for an extraordinary display of skill and athleticism.
