“I started playing badminton at the age of 7. It all began as a fun activity when my sister, who happened to be a coach, introduced me to the sport. As I grew older, my competitive spirit took over, and I started participating in tournaments. The positive results I achieved fueled my dedication to badminton.”

“I’ve had the privilege of participating in over 80 tournaments throughout my career. Among my most notable accomplishments is winning the bronze medal in the Pan American Games held in Toronto in 2015.”

To how many countries has badminton taken you?

“I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to approximately 30 countries. Most of my journeys have taken me across the Americas, with additional visits to Europe, Asia, and even Oceania.”

What anecdotes come to your mind when you remember your trips?

“My extensive travels have gifted me with countless anecdotes. However, one incident stands out in particular. During a tournament in Brazil, I realized I had forgotten my shoes back in Mexico. Thankfully, Yonex, the brand that sponsors me, generously provided me with a pair of shoes, although they were one size larger. Despite the shoes being a little loose, I managed to win the match. It was both a challenging and memorable experience.”

How does it feel to be one of the best players in Mexico?

“It’s an incredible feeling. Badminton may not be as popular in Mexico as some other sports, but the competition is fierce. To be recognized as one of the best requires immense dedication and hard work. The satisfaction I derive from being among the top players in my country makes every effort worthwhile.”

What are your short and medium term objectives as a badminton player?

“My immediate goals are to win medals in both singles and doubles events at the upcoming Pan American Games. Additionally, I aim to achieve success in the Central American games. Looking further ahead, my ultimate dream is to represent Mexico in the Olympics.”

Do you perform other activities in parallel to your career as a badminton player, such as studies or work?

“Yes, I am currently pursuing a degree in International Business. I have one more year remaining to complete my studies.”

How difficult is it to balance training and studying simultaneously?

“Balancing training and studies is undoubtedly challenging. I often find myself wishing for more hours in a day and days in a week. Nevertheless, I have managed to excel in my academic pursuits alongside my badminton career.”

How do you maintain commitment and discipline in your life?

“I have taught myself the importance of discipline, which serves as the foundation for both sports and life. It is a quality that I have cultivated and continuously strive to uphold.”

In addition to sport satisfactions, what other things has badminton given you?

“Badminton has blessed me with numerous gifts beyond the joy of competing. It has allowed me to explore different countries, forge friendships with people from all around the world, and step out of my comfort zone, continually embracing new experiences.”

What are your favorite hobbies?

“Outside of badminton, I am an avid soccer player. I also enjoy spending my free time watching gangster movies at the cinema.”

“My sister, Sara Castillo, was my very first coach.”

“I represent Code Jalisco, a badminton club based in Jalisco, Mexico.”
