Badminton Pan America

Yesterday marked the beginning of the 11th edition of the Para-Badminton World Championships, held from November 22 to 26 at Dong Chung Gymnasium in Uslan-Korea. With 268 athletes from 41 countries participating in 22 events, this year’s championship is the biggest in history.

Representing our continent, athletes from Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, Canada, and the United States are showcasing their skills at the tournament. The Classifier Workshop includes participants like Tatiana Merino from Chile and a representative from Canada, while the Workshop for Referees and Technical Delegates consists of Federico Valdez, Jeff Bell, and Enrique Charadán from Peru, Canada, and Cuba respectively, along with Cuban referee Miguel León.

Our athletes had an outstanding first day. The duo of Marcelo Alves Conceicao (BRA) and Pilar Jauregui (PER) triumphed over Italians Yuri Ferrigno and Marcela Li Brizzi, winning 21-5, 21-6 in the XD WH1-2 event. They continued their winning streak by defeating Stephen Duran (FRA) and Esther Torres (SPA) 24-22, 21-9 in their second match.

Giuliana Poveda (PER) and Niall Mcveigh (IRE) also displayed their skills by winning all three of their matches. They emerged victorious against Alexander Mekhdiev (RUS) and Deidre Nagle (SCO) with a score of 21-12, 21-10 in their first match of the XD SS6 event. In their second match, they defeated Paul Doling (ENG) and Randika Doling (SRI) 21-4, 21-6. Finally, they secured another win against the Indian pair Raja Magotra and Ruhi Satish Shingade with a score of 21-12, 21-5.

In the MS SL4 event, Raul Anguiano (GUA) won against Hugo Saumier (FRA) with a score of 10-21, 21-12, 21-17. Giuliana Poveda (PER) emerged victorious in the WS SS6 event by defeating Yasmina Eissa (EGY) 21-13, 21-14. Pascal La Pointe (CAN) defeated Bobby Griffin (ENG) with a score of 21-13, 21-17 in the MS SL4 event, while Pilar Jauregui (PER) overcame Tatiana Greeva (Russia) 21-15, 23-21 in the WS WH2 event.

On the second day of competition, the duo of Marcelo Alves Conceicao and Pilar Jauregui continued their winning streak by defeating the Israeli pair Amir Levi and Nina Gorodetzky with a score of 21-15, 13-21, 21-13 in the XD WH1-2 category. Marcelo Alves Conceicao also secured a win in the MS WH1 event with a score of 21-0, 21-2 against Michael Smith (IRE). Giuliana Poveda (PER) and Niall Mcveigh (IRE) defeated Mark Joseph Dharmai (IND) and Maria Bartusz (POL) 22-20, 21-13 in the XD SS6 event. Pilar Jauregui (PER) won against Spanish player Esther Torres with a score of 21-14, 21-10 in the WS WH2 event.
