Fans were treated to an eventful day at the OUE Singapore Open 2017, with both defending singles champions facing early eliminations. Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who had hopes of reclaiming his Men’s Singles title, was defeated by Lee Dong Keun in a thrilling match that lasted 76 minutes. The game swung back and forth before Lee emerged victorious with a score of 19-21 21-15 21-18.

In the Women’s Singles category, Ratchanok Intanon, last season’s champion, was convincingly beaten by a determined Sayaka Sato. Sato displayed an aggressive style of play, leaving no room for Intanon to assert herself on the court. Despite a quick comeback in the second game by Intanon, Sato held her ground and secured a memorable victory.

Other notable results in the early rounds included Fitriani Fitriani fighting past Minatsu Mitani, He Bingjiao, Beiwen Zhang, and the in-form Tai Tzu Ying advancing in the Women’s Singles category. In Men’s Singles, Hu Yun and Ng Ka Long emerged victorious, while the Verma brothers faced early exits.

In Mixed Doubles, Yugo Kobayashi and Misaki Matsutomo secured a win against Nipitphon Phuangphuapet and Jongkolphan Kititharakul, while Men’s Doubles saw the unfortunate retirement of Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding due to injury.
