The future of badminton and the prospect of change will take center stage at the Badminton World Federation’s upcoming meeting in Bangkok. Delegates from the federation’s 189 member associations will gather in Thailand’s capital for two days of important discussions ahead of the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2018.

The BWF Members Forum and BWF Annual General Meeting will be the focus of attention on Friday, May 18th, and Saturday, May 19th, respectively. Both events will be held at the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre. This year’s theme for the Forum, “Enhancing Badminton’s Future – Right Time, Right Now,” highlights the BWF Council’s ongoing campaign to innovate badminton with key enhancements.

The Forum will kick off with a welcome from BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer, followed by a presentation by keynote speaker Sonja Piontek entitled “Magic Happens outside the Comfort Zone: Managing Change – Challenges, Risks and Possibilities.” Piontek, an award-winning marketeer, will explore the idea of change and how it can unlock new opportunities.

One of the forum’s segments will focus on enhancing badminton, presenting a package of enhancements including changes to the scoring system, on-court coaching, and service laws. The aim of these changes is to increase excitement, shorten match lengths, and encourage players to rely more on their instincts.

The Forum will also feature talks on sports presentation, trends in broadcast media and digital space, the HSBC BWF World Tour, integrity in badminton, and gender equity.

On the following day, the BWF Annual General Meeting will give delegates the opportunity to vote on the Council’s proposals. The aim of these proposals is to make badminton more exciting for fans while shortening match lengths and increasing the reliance on players’ instincts.

In between the meetings, delegates will gather with the 32 teams competing in the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2018 for a Welcome Dinner. During the event, the BWF will present Distinguished Service Awards to three individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport.

Stay tuned for more updates as badminton continues to evolve and innovate.
