India’s Mixed Team made an impressive comeback against Switzerland in the Universiade Gwangju 2015, demonstrating their determination to stay in the competition.

India’s Resilience

The Swiss team, led by Thomas Heiniger and Sanya Herzig, initially took the lead in their Group D clash. However, the Indian team, having suffered a morning defeat to Thailand, needed a victory to stay in the tournament. With a remarkable performance, Hema Nagendrababu and Meghana Jakkampudi fought hard, but ultimately lost to Herzig and Heiniger with a close score of 12-21, 21-19, 21-18.

A Turn of Events

Shreyansh Jaiswal quickly turned the tables by defeating Christian Kirchmayr in the Men’s Singles event, securing a crucial point for India. The duo of Arjun Kumar Reddy and Hema Nagendrababu continued the momentum, winning the Men’s Doubles match against Christoph Heiniger and Thomas Heiniger with a thrilling score of 23-25, 21-16, 21-12.

Vaishnavi Bhale’s Triumph

The tie was eventually sealed in India’s favor by Vaishnavi Bhale, who dominated the Women’s Singles match against Ayla Huser with a resounding score of 21-14, 21-14.

Korean Domination in the Morning Session

In another match, the host nation Korea displayed their supremacy by defeating Uganda 5-0 in the Mixed Team event. Placed in Group H alongside Uganda and Great Britain, the Korean team swiftly conquered their opponents. Notably, Ko Sung Hyun and Lee So Hee secured a quick victory in the Mixed Doubles match, winning 21-8, 21-4 against Herbert Ebayo and Daisy Nakalyango. Jeon Hyeok Jin added another point for Korea by overpowering Yakoub Musisi in the Men’s Singles match with a score of 21-4, 21-14. Kim Hyo Min easily defeated Bridget Shamim Bangi with a score of 21-4, 21-12 in the Women’s Singles event. Kim Ki Jung and Kim Sa Rang, along with Go Ah Ra and Yoo Hae Won, contributed to Korea’s 5-0 victory in the Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles matches, respectively.

Results from Other Matches

In addition to India and Korea’s triumphs, badminton powerhouses such as China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, and Indonesia also secured convincing victories over their opponents. Teams from the USA, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Finland, Hong Kong, Poland, Estonia, Botswana, Canada, Russia, and Brazil displayed their skills but ultimately suffered defeats.

The Universiade Gwangju 2015

The Universiade Gwangju 2015, organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), has brought together more than 9,000 student-athletes and officials from 170 countries, making it one of the largest multi-sport events globally. The event focuses on four main aspects: Eco-Friendliness, Peace, IT, and Culture.

Badminton, although optional in this edition, will become a compulsory sport in the Summer Universiade starting from 2021.
