Minutes after an intense and grueling match, Nozomi Okuhara found herself unable to move. Her opponent, Wang Shixian, looked sympathetically at the cramp-ridden and tearful Japanese player. This Women’s Singles quarter-final at the Maybank Malaysia Open had been one for the history books, lasting a jaw-dropping 111 minutes. Wang Shixian emerged victorious with a score of 21-19 15-21 22-20.

The match showcased the incredible determination and skill of both players. Okuhara, despite her smaller stature, matched Wang shot for shot, diving across the court and returning every difficult shot. Her defensive game was on point, repeatedly pushing Wang to her limits. With an 18-15 lead in the third game, Okuhara seemed poised for victory, but Wang fought back and ultimately secured the win on her second match point.

Wang expressed her admiration for Okuhara’s tenacity, acknowledging her opponent’s cramping but noting her unwavering fighting spirit. She was thrilled to reach the World Superseries semi-final after a long time.

In the semi-finals, Wang Shixian would face World champion Carolina Marin, while defending champion Li Xuerui would take on world No.1 Saina Nehwal. The Men’s Singles semi-finals featured Lin Dan, who battled past teammate Tian Houwei in a three-game match, and Chen Long, Wang Zhengming, and Jan O Jorgensen, the only non-Chinese semi-finalist.
