BWF News

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced an adjusted tournament calendar for the HSBC BWF World Tour in 2020. Prioritizing the health and safety of all participants in light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the BWF has made changes to ensure a safe environment for all international tournaments.

One of the main challenges faced by the BWF is the movement of participants between different territories with varying entry and safety restrictions. To address this, a new tournament calendar has been developed to replace the original locations and dates of the HSBC BWF World Tour.

The TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2020 in Aarhus, Denmark will continue as planned from October 3-11, 2020, and will be followed by a two-week European leg in Odense, Denmark (weeks 42 and 43). These two tournaments, DANISA Denmark Open I and Denmark Open II, will be Super 750 events.

After the European leg, there will be a two-week transition period to safely move the tour and all participants to Asia. Two Super 1000 tournaments will be held in weeks 46 and 47, culminating in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in week 48. The locations for the Asian leg tournaments are yet to be announced.

It is important to note that all other HSBC BWF World Tour tournaments on the original calendar will no longer take place as scheduled. The BWF is currently working with Member Associations to assess the feasibility of hosting the Asian leg tournaments, and an announcement will be made soon to allow participants to plan their travel accordingly.

To ensure the safe return of international badminton, the BWF has shared its Safety Protocols and Operating Procedures with Member Associations. These guidelines outline the necessary precautions and will be made available to the public in a separate announcement.

Accreditations may be revoked and participants may not be allowed entry to the venue if these guidelines are not followed. The BWF prioritizes the health and safety of all participants and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all parties involved in the planning process.

Tournaments completed in 2020 will still contribute to world ranking points. However, these points will only be included once the World Rankings are unfrozen. The exact details of this process and the structure of subsequent rankings will be released shortly.
