Tai Tzu Ying Clinches Fifth Consecutive Title at OUE Singapore Open 2017

BWF News

Tai Tzu Ying, the unstoppable force in women’s singles badminton, continues to dominate the sport with her fifth successive title win on the MetLife BWF World Superseries tour. In a thrilling final, Tai defeated her closest rival, Carolina Marin, to claim the OUE Singapore Open 2017 title.

A Display of Brilliance

Timing her acceleration to perfection, Tai Tzu Ying showcased her trademark wizardry on the court. In the first game, she pulled away at 14-14, leaving Marin struggling to keep up. Similarly, in the second game, Tai surged ahead at 8-8 while Marin’s game faltered. The Spanish left-hander sprayed shots wide and later admitted to struggling with a “negative” state of mind for the first time in her career.

Humble Victory

Amidst loud applause and cheers from the crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Tai Tzu Ying remained humble and relaxed. Winning her first Superseries title in the Lion City, she reflected on her unbeaten run in the tour, having secured victories in Hong Kong, Dubai, Birmingham, and Kuching prior to Singapore.

“I’ve not thought too much about winning these five tournaments. I think everyone around me is more concerned about these five titles. But for me, I just want to play well in every tournament,” said the champion. “In every competition, I hope to discover and learn from my weaknesses, to train and correct them.”

Inspired Performance

Tai attributed Marin’s errors to her rush to score points, while she herself remained patient and focused throughout the match. Despite expecting a long battle, Tai’s consistency and Marin’s mistakes resulted in an unexpected quick victory.

“I thought I would have a long match because last week we played three games that lasted 80 minutes, which was incredible. I prepared myself to play for more than an hour today, but I was consistent and she made many mistakes,” Tai explained.

Climbing the Rankings

As a result of this win, Tai Tzu Ying will claim the top spot in the Destination Dubai Rankings, replacing Marin as the new leader in women’s singles badminton.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles category, B. Sai Praneeth secured his first Superseries title by defeating his compatriot and training partner, Kidambi Srikanth. Praneeth expressed his joy, stating that he had been longing for a tournament victory after consistently performing well against top players.

Tribute to Late President

In the midst of his celebration, Praneeth paid tribute to the late President of the Badminton Association of India, Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport in India.

“I think he is the one who made Indian badminton so big. He brought Premier Badminton League. He brought the World Championships (Thomas & Uber Cup Finals) and he brought the Superseries. I think he is the man who has done a lot for badminton,” Praneeth acknowledged.
