The OUE Singapore Open 2014 has made history in the world of badminton by ranking ninth in the Association Internationale De La Presse Sportive (AIPS) poll for the world’s Best Press Facility in 2014.

A Milestone Achievement

For the first time ever, a badminton tournament has broken into the top ten of this annual poll run by the international organization for sporting media to judge press facilities at sporting events. This is an incredible achievement, especially considering that the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, and the Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament occupied the top three places respectively.

“This breakthrough provides the perfect platform for the AIPS Badminton Commission to launch our own Media Award,” said AIPS Badminton Commission chairman William Kings. The Yonex All England Open Championships, the opening event on the 2015 MetLife BWF Superseries circuit, is less than three weeks away, and the commission is excited to celebrate the success of the Singapore Open.

Recognition of Excellence

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund also praised the Singapore Open, which is among 12 tournaments comprising the MetLife BWF World Superseries. The event, held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last year, ticked all the boxes for media facilities and photography positions.

“Our badminton events have improved significantly in recent years,” Lund said. “This recognition salutes the media services at global sports events, and to be counted among the best worldwide for 2014 is fantastic. We congratulate the organizers of the OUE Singapore Open and look forward to continued high standards at that tournament. We hope this recognition will inspire other badminton tournaments to realize the importance of servicing the media well and raising the bar at their own events.”

Commitment to Media Servicing

Ronnie Lim, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Badminton Association, pledged that his team will continue to excel in media servicing. By providing good facilities for the press, Lim believes that more publicity will be generated for badminton, further promoting the sport.

Celebrating Badminton’s Success

The AIPS honor roll for 2014 also recognized BWF World champions, Chen Long of China and Carolina Marin of Spain. Chen Long placed 17th among a stellar field of athletes that included German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, tennis legend Roger Federer, and football supremo Cristiano Ronaldo. Carolina Marin, last season’s sensation at the BWF World Championships in Copenhagen, ranked ninth among female sports stars in a poll won by American tennis queen Serena Williams. Japan’s Men World Team champions also made the list, placing 13th on the Best Team category.

“These results herald a great breakthrough for badminton overall, and it’s now for us to capitalize on the attention and recognition that we are getting globally,” noted Lund. “It shows that the media is watching us, and it’s a great opportunity that we must take advantage of.”
