BWF News

Today, the BWF (Badminton World Federation) proudly joins the global celebration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, championed by Peace and Sport. This annual observance recognizes the power of sports to foster peace, inclusivity, and positive change in society.

Embracing #WhiteCard Campaign

Through the #WhiteCard campaign, Peace and Sport unites athletes, governments, and civil societies in commemorating this day. BWF has been an ardent supporter of this initiative, encouraging its athletes to actively participate.

In 2022, the core message of the campaign is “Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport.” It aims to highlight the transformative stories of individuals and communities impacted by sports worldwide, emphasizing the role of sports in advancing human rights and sustainable development.

BWF’s Commitment

BWF has a long-standing commitment to Peace and Sport. In 2018, the federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the SportAccord Convention in Bangkok, reaffirming its dedication to promoting peace and inclusivity through sports.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected badminton community activities in recent years, BWF continues to stand firm in its support. In 2019, the federation organized a charity coaching clinic for underprivileged children in Kuala Lumpur, coinciding with the #WhiteCard campaign.

Swiss Badminton’s Impact

Swiss Badminton is making a remarkable contribution to the cause. They have launched the ‘It’s Shuttle Time For Peace’ project, starting on April 7. This initiative aims to provide free and regular training for Ukrainian children who have sought refuge in Switzerland due to the ongoing conflict in their home country. Over a two-week period, the project aims to benefit up to 40% of Ukrainian refugee children under 18 years old.

To further support the campaign’s spirit, Swiss Badminton will organize a tournament on April 30 for the participants of the project. This event showcases the positive impact of sports in people’s lives, regardless of their background.

BWF’s CSR Project

David Cabello, the Chair of BWF’s Development & Sport For All Committee, expressed his enthusiasm for the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, he lauded Swiss Badminton’s exemplary efforts to embody the core message of using sports as a means to secure a peaceful future for all. Badminton, with its universal accessibility both indoors and outdoors, represents a gateway to sports for children from diverse backgrounds.
