England, Korea, Malaysia, and Scotland Celebrate Success at the England Para-Badminton International

England, Korea, Malaysia, and Scotland had a lot to celebrate at the recent England Para-Badminton International held at the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall at Loughborough University. The tournament showcased remarkable performances and exciting matches from talented players around the world.

Daniel Bethell’s Triumph in the SL3 Men’s Singles

Daniel Bethell, despite a disappointing doubles defeat with Bobby Griffin, made a stunning comeback in the SL3 Men’s Singles final. He avenged his earlier loss by defeating Malaysia’s Teak Han Liew with a dominant display, winning the match 21-4 21-8. Teak and Bakri Omar had previously secured victory in the Men’s Doubles by defeating Bethell and Bobby Griffin with a score of 21-14 21-18.

Malaysian Dominance in SL4 and SU5 Categories

Malaysia showcased their strength in the SL4 and SU5 categories, claiming two more titles. Bakri Omar emerged victorious in the SL4 Men’s Singles, defeating his teammate Hairol Fozi Saaba with a score of 21-9 21-12. In the SU5 Men’s Singles, top seed Liek Hou Cheah secured another title for Malaysia by defeating France’s Colin Kerouanton 21-11 21-9. Liek also teamed up with Saaba to win the SU5 doubles, defeating the top-seeded pair of Bartlomiej Mroz from Poland and Wei Ming Tay from Singapore (as seen in the image above) with a score of 21-13 21-18. Malaysia’s outstanding performances led them to claim a total of four gold medals on the finals day.

Scotland’s Fiona Christie Shines in WH1 & 2 Women’s Doubles

Fiona Christie from Scotland delivered an exceptional performance, winning her second gold medal of the tournament. Following her success in the WH2 Women’s Singles, she partnered with Thailand’s Pookkhum Sujirat to secure victory in the combined WH1 & 2 Women’s Doubles. They defeated England’s Fiona Kelly and Swiss star Karin Suter-Erath with a score of 21-11 21-14. Sujirat also achieved a golden double by defeating Suter-Erath in the singles final with a score of 21-12 21-18.

England’s Notable Performances

England also had several standout performances. Martin Rooke and Suter-Erath teamed up to defeat Thailand’s Sujirat and Jakarin Homhaul with a score of 21-14 21-14, securing another gold for England. Krysten Coombs, the second seed, emerged victorious in a thrilling SS6 Men’s Singles final against his teammate and top seed Andrew Martin, winning the match 21-14 24-22.

Korean Success in Wheelchair Events

Korea showed their prowess in wheelchair events, with Kim Jungjun and Lee Sam Seop winning the gold medal in the wheelchair Men’s Doubles. They defeated the pairing of Ho Yuen Chan from Hong Kong and Homhaul from Thailand with a score of 21-15 21-8. Lee continued Korea’s winning streak by defeating Homhaul once again in the WH1 final, claiming his third silver medal of the tournament with a score of 21-16 21-8. Kim also had an outstanding performance, defeating his teammate and top seed Kim Kyung Hoon in a gripping WH2 final with a score of 21-17 14-21 21-19.

Exciting Contests in WH1 & WH2 Women’s Doubles

Israel’s Nina Gorodetzky and Russia’s Liliia Prokofeva (as seen in the image below) delivered a thrilling performance, denying England’s Sharon Jones-Barnes and Paula Robinson a gold medal in the combined WH1 & WH2 Women’s Doubles. The match was fiercely contested, with Gorodetzky and Prokofeva ultimately emerging victorious with a score of 21-15 18-21 21-16.

The tournament showcased the incredible talent and determination of para-badminton players, and these exceptional athletes will now prepare for upcoming competitions, including the European Championships in Murcia, Spain, in September and the Asian Para-Games in Incheon, Korea, in October.
