BWF News

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has released safety protocols and operating procedures to ensure the safe return of international badminton. These protocols and procedures have been shared with all Member Associations and are in place for all tournaments during the adjusted tournament calendar.

Safety First

The BWF is committed to creating the safest possible environment for all stakeholders involved in the tournament. This includes players, coaches, other entourage, the organizing committee workforce, volunteers, media, and technical officials. To achieve this, the BWF has implemented strict compliance with the Safety Protocols & Operating Procedures.

The Bubble System

Accreditations for tournament personnel will be divided into three categories or ‘bubbles’ – green, orange, and red. The green category consists of key accredited personnel who will undergo COVID-19 testing prior to each event. Participants in the green category must also present a negative test result upon arrival at the tournament destination. Testing during tournament weeks will be conducted by the BWF at their expense.

To minimize contact between the bubbles, procedures will be in place to ensure minimal contact between those in the green category and those who have not been tested. It is important for all participants to adhere to the BWF guidelines and protocols to maintain the integrity of the ‘bubble system’. Any breaches will result in accreditations being revoked and participants not being permitted to enter the venue.

International Travel

Teams and participants entering tournaments during the European and Asian legs are advised not to return to their home countries, as they may be subject to a 14-day quarantine period upon their return. The BWF has factored in a two-week transition time to safely move the tour and all participants from Europe to Asia, including necessary quarantine or screening periods.

For the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2020 in Denmark, international participants are not required to undergo quarantine upon arrival. They must present a negative COVID-19 test and relevant travel documentation.

Conclusion

The BWF is committed to the safe return of international badminton and has implemented comprehensive safety protocols and operating procedures. By following these guidelines, all participants can take care of each other and ensure a safe and successful tournament.
