BWF News

With the increasing dedication of young badminton players to their training and competitive careers, transitioning into the “real world” beyond the court can be a challenge. Recognizing this, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has implemented projects to support players in pursuing educational and alternate career goals while still actively competing.

To inform players about these projects and available resources, the BWF World Junior Championships in October provided the perfect platform. With many players on the cusp of starting their professional careers, the championships presented an opportunity for BWF to engage with approximately 330 players from 27 Member Associations. Through direct interactions and focus group sessions, BWF Development Manager Erica Khoo and BWF Development Officer Tracy Tan provided detailed information and an overview of BWF’s offerings.

These sessions, which included fun quizzes and gift takeaways, allowed BWF to identify any gaps in communication and provide assistance to interested individuals. One particularly popular aspect for young players was BWF’s dual-career pathway, developed in partnership with the World Academy of Sport (WAoS). This pathway offers an Athlete Certificate, Bachelor of International Sport Management degree, and Postgraduate Certificate in International Sport Management. Participants were excited to learn about the various opportunities available, including full scholarships for those competing at the World Juniors to complete the courses.

Several players have already enrolled in the Postgraduate Certificate and Bachelor Degree in International Sport Management, recognizing the value of these programs for their personal and professional development. Additionally, BWF offers a Fast Track Coaching Course under the BWF Coach Education pathway program, which allows international players to pursue careers in badminton as coaches, tournament organizers, national administrators, Technical Officials, or Shuttle Time ambassadors.

Given the positive response from players and teams, BWF plans to expand its outreach efforts to include more players across various events and levels, such as Para badminton, Super 100, International Challenge, International Series, and junior events. Collaborations with the Continental Confederations are also in the works to deliver further activation opportunities.

By supporting players in balancing their athletic and educational endeavors, BWF aims to empower the next generation of badminton stars to thrive both on and off the court.
