The Badminton World Federation Celebrates Top Players in 2014

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is gearing up to honor its top players for the year 2014 at the BWF Destination Dubai World Superseries Finals. This highly anticipated event will take place at the Four Seasons Resort in Dubai on December 15th. The ceremony marks the start of the season finale of the MetLife BWF World Superseries, showcasing the top eight qualifiers in each of the five traditional categories.

Celebrating Outstanding Achievements

Several of the sport’s leading personalities are in line to win the prestigious awards. China has dominated this year with three out of five nominations for Male Player of the Year, four for Female Player of the Year, and three for Most Promising Player of the Year.

In the Male Player of the Year category, the competition is fierce. China’s world champion Chen Long, Asian Games winner Lin Dan, and doubles specialist Zhang Nan are battling against Korea’s Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong. Chen secured two World Superseries titles and his first World championship, while Lin Dan made a strong comeback after a seven-month absence, winning five titles. Zhang Nan was exceptional in Mixed Doubles, winning four World Superseries titles, the World championship, and the Asian Games gold.

Korea’s Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong are also strong contenders in the male category. They had an outstanding season, winning four World Superseries titles and securing runner-up spots at the BWF World Championships and the Asian Games. Yoo also claimed the Asian Championships gold medal with Shin Baek Choel.

The female category is equally competitive, featuring the world’s top three singles players: Li Xuerui, Wang Shixian, and Wang Yihan. Li, last year’s Player of the Year, reached the final in every tournament she participated in, winning five. Wang Shixian secured three Superseries titles, while Wang Yihan finished the season with the Asian Games gold medal and two Superseries titles.

Doubles specialist Zhao Yunlei, who excelled in both Mixed Doubles (with Zhang Nan) and Women’s Doubles (with Tian Qing), is another strong contender. She won a clutch of titles, including four Superseries titles with Zhang Nan and three with Tian Qing. Zhao also claimed World championship titles in both categories.

Denmark’s Christinna Pedersen, the only non-Chinese nominee in this category, won the European Championships twice and also emerged victoriously at the India Open and Indonesian Open (with Joachim Fischer Nielsen).

Recognizing Excellence

The BWF awards honor players who have consistently performed exceptionally throughout the year. The criteria for Player of the Year include outstanding and consistent performance, participation in BWF Major Events and World Superseries events, being a role model, and ranking in the top five in the year of nomination.

The Most Promising Player of the Year award, named after Malaysian legend Eddy Choong, recognizes emerging talents who are not only exceptional players but also role models and popular figures among their peers.

Akane Yamaguchi from Japan, a two-time World Junior champion, is poised to retain the Most Promising Player of the Year honor after an impressive performance in 2013. Yamaguchi won the Asian Under-19 and World Junior titles and played a crucial role in leading her country to the runners-up position in the Uber Cup last May. She has also secured a spot in the prestigious season-ender in Dubai.

However, Yamaguchi faced strong competition in the junior circuit. China’s He Bing Jiao, the runner-up in the World Junior Championships, defeated Yamaguchi in the final of the Youth Olympic Games. He Bing Jiao also claimed a bronze medal in Mixed Doubles and led her team to victory in the World Junior team event.

Two other Chinese players, Lin Gui Pu and Chen Qingchen, are also nominees for Most Promising Player of the Year. Lin Gui Pu emerged as the World Junior champion in Men’s Singles and won titles at the Dutch and German Junior championships. Chen Qingchen showcased her skills at both the junior and senior levels, winning two World Junior championship titles and reaching the semi-finals of the China Open Superseries Premier (with Zheng Si Wei).

Indonesia’s Rosyita Eka Putri Sari, who won the Vietnam Open and led her team to the final of the World Junior team event, is the lone Indonesian nominee.

Conclusion

The BWF is set to celebrate the exceptional achievements of the top players in the badminton world. The awards recognize their outstanding performances, talent, and dedication throughout the year. Stay tuned for the announcement of the winners at the Players’ Reception and Gala Dinner on December 15th.
