News | BWF Sudirman Cup

Former world No.1 pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, who have been absent from the circuit since January, have been included in the Indonesian squad for the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2023 in Suzhou. Alongside the Minions, the Indonesian team boasts strong men’s doubles with All England champions Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Thailand Masters winners Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin. However, Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati, their top-ranked mixed doubles pair, will not be participating. Instead, Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari and Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja will be taking their place.

Japan’s men’s singles charge will be led by young star Kodai Naraoka, who has reached his career-best ranking of No.5. He is the highest-ranked among the three men’s singles players in the squad, with Kenta Nishimoto and Kanta Tsuneyama also representing Japan. However, former No.1 Kento Momota, who led Japan to the Sudirman Cup title round in the last two editions, has not been named in the squad. In the women’s singles, Akane Yamaguchi will be shouldering the responsibilities, with Saena Kawakami as her backup.

Hosts and title favorites China have a formidable lineup in every department. They have included world junior champion Liu Sheng Shu in the team. Despite being only 19 years old, Liu has made an impact in her first season on the HSBC BWF World Tour, winning two events with different partners. The men’s singles will be represented by All England finalists Li Shi Feng and Shi Yu Qi, as well as Lu Guang Zu. In the women’s singles, China has Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei, He Bing Jiao, and Wang Zhi Yi.
