News | BWF World Championships

Training for the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2021 was not only a vital preparation for Thet Htar Thuzar’s badminton career but also a means of escaping the distressing news from her home country of Myanmar. Despite the challenges she faced due to the difficult circumstances in her country, Thuzar remained focused on her training, filtering out disturbing information and dedicating all her energies to excel in the tournament.

Thuzar, a 22-year-old athlete, emphasized the importance of badminton in helping her shut off from everything else and forget about the troubles around her. She found solace in the sport, using it as a way to stay busy and not dwell on the negative news.

Qualifying for the World Championships was a significant achievement for Thuzar, who was busy pursuing her MBA at the time. With limited training and preparation, she faced additional challenges such as obtaining a visa and arranging flights. Despite the difficulties, Thuzar managed to persevere and start her preparations for the tournament.

As this is only her second event of the year, Thuzar reflects on her experience at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with mixed feelings. While she cherished the opportunity to play on the world’s biggest stage, she also had to contend with online abuse due to the charged political situation in her home country. Despite the adversity, Thuzar gave her best in the tournament and appreciates the support she received from her Indonesian fans after gaining a following on Instagram.
