News | BWF World Championships

Unseeded Korean Men’s Doubles pair, Chung Eui Seok and Kim Dukyoung, continue their impressive run at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017. They defeated England’s Chris Langridge/Marcus Ellis, advancing to the quarter-finals.

The Korean duo, relatively unknown at the elite level, had already caused an upset in the second round by defeating No.5 seeds Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong from Malaysia. Their aggressive playstyle helped them secure a hard-fought victory against the Olympic bronze medallists, winning the match 21-16 18-21 21-15.

Next, they will face Indonesian duo Mohammad Ahsan/Rian Agung Saputro, who defeated Denmark’s David Daugaard/Mathias Christiansen in straight games.

Kim Dukyoung expressed his joy, stating, “It feels like a dream, and we’re very happy. It is our duty to live up to the high standards of Korean Men’s Doubles.”

Scottish Delight

In the Women’s Singles category, local player Kirsty Gilmour delivered an exceptional performance, thrilling the home fans. She defeated sixth seed He Bingjiao in a thrilling match that ended 21-14 15-21 21-16.

Gilmour showcased her attacking skills and jump smashes, which unsettled her opponent. Although He Bingjiao made a comeback in the second game, Gilmour maintained her lead throughout the deciding game. With tremendous support from the crowd, Gilmour converted the third of her match points, overwhelming with emotions.

She mentioned, “There’s no one thing to rely on; you need plans B, C, all the way to Z. There’s always a backup plan. I didn’t plan to come out fast and furious, even though I’m known for that. It took me the second game to learn what not to do. I feel like I’ve worked on my ability to adapt. Against Saina, it’s back to square one.”

Saina Nehwal’s Triumph

India’s Saina Nehwal, overshadowed by her higher-achieving teammates like Pusarla V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, proved her mettle in the tournament. Nehwal defeated Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun, the second seed, with a confident performance that concluded with a score of 21-19 21-15.

Nehwal’s physically dominant game overpowered Sung Ji Hyun, securing her eighth victory out of ten matches against the Korean player. Although Sung Ji Hyun initially took the lead in the first game, Nehwal’s dominance grew with each rally. Nehwal caught up to her opponent, took the lead, and sealed her quarter-final spot comfortably.

Reflecting on the match, Nehwal said, “I felt a bit of doubt with the way she played the first game. She was picking up all my shots. All her shots were sharp, the half-smashes were very steep. She was amazing in the first game. She doesn’t have a big hit, but her shots are very tough to take because you have to keep lunging. I’m happy that I picked up her shots.”

The other quarter-final matchups in the Women’s Singles category include defending champion Carolina Marin against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, China’s Chen Yufei against Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, and India’s Pusarla V Sindhu against China’s Sun Yu.

Intanon, despite expecting a challenge from Chen Xiaoxin, expressed surprise at her own victory. She commented, “Maybe she was nervous; she’s much better than she was today.”

Wong expressed his elation, saying, “Unbelievable! I’ve been preparing for this tournament for the last two months. I was solely focused on this. Physically, today’s match was better than yesterday’s, which was much tougher.”

Wong’s next opponent will be Lin Dan, whom he defeated back in 2011 at the Denmark Open but hasn’t managed to win a game against in their past three encounters.

In the bottom quarter of the draw, defending champion Chen Long set up an all-Chinese quarter-final against Tian Houwei after defeating India’s Ajay Jayaram with a comfortable score of 21-11 21-10.

In the Women’s Doubles category, second seeds Christinna Pedersen and Kamila Rytter Juhl faced a tough challenge from Korea’s Kim Hye Rin/Yoo Hae Won but eventually emerged victorious with a score of 22-20 21-19 in an intense hour-long battle.

Unfortunately, fellow-Danes Sara Thygesen/Maiken Fruergaard lost a closely contested match against Korea’s Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan.
