News | BWF World Championships

Most of badminton’s top players are on track to qualify for the upcoming TOTAL BWF World Championships 2018 in Nanjing. With the qualification deadline just a month away, the world rankings as of April 26 will determine the eligible players. As there are no major events until then, significant changes in the rankings are unlikely.

Men’s Singles

In the Men’s Singles category, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, the defending champion, is leading the “Race to Nanjing” with 75,470 points. Other strong contenders for qualification are Chen Long, Shi Yuqi, and Lin Dan from China, as well as Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, and Sai Praneeth from India. Denmark, Japan, and Korea are also expected to have multiple qualifiers.

The Member Associations (MA) have the freedom to field up to four players if they are within the top 8, three players if they are within the top 24, or two players if they are ranked within the top 150. The MA must confirm the entry of their qualified players by May 10. BWF will then inform the MAs about Phase 2 qualifiers and reserves by the following week. The deadline for MAs to confirm the participation of their Phase 2 qualifiers and reserves is May 24.

Women’s Singles

In the Women’s Singles category, Akane Yamaguchi from Japan is leading the “Race to Nanjing” with 87,411 points. Other top contenders include Tai Tzu Ying from Chinese Taipei, Pusarla V Sindhu from India, Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand, Chen Yufei from China, Nozomi Okuhara from Japan, and Carolina Marin from Spain. Japan and China are expected to have multiple players in the draw.

Men’s Doubles

In the Men’s Doubles category, there are several pairs who have secured enough points to qualify. Mohammad Ahsan and Rian Agung Saputro, the silver medalists from the last World Championships, are currently ranked 19th. Indonesia, Denmark, Chinese Taipei, and Japan are expected to have three qualified pairs each.

Women’s Doubles

Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara, despite being ranked 11th, might fall short of qualifying as there are three higher-ranked Japanese pairs. Japan, Indonesia, and Korea have three possible qualifiers each.

Mixed Doubles

China has a strong presence in the Mixed Doubles category. Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen are leading the “Race to Nanjing” rankings, while Zheng Siwei is also ranked 8th with current partner Huang Yaqiong. China has the option to choose one of these two combinations, along with two of the other three pairs in the top 24. Malaysia is also expected to have a strong presence in Mixed Doubles.
