News | BWF World Championships

While the competition was fierce and many teams faltered, Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong showed their resilience by successfully defending their mixed-doubles crown at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2019 in Basel, Switzerland. The top-seeded pair dominated the final match, defeating Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai with a score of 21-8, 21-12 in just 35 minutes. This victory marked their second consecutive world championship title, adding to their previous win on home soil in Nanjing last year.

As the sole representatives from China in the finals, Zheng and Huang were determined to uphold their country’s honor and put on a masterclass performance in front of the 9,000 spectators at St. Jakobshalle. With Zheng’s powerful play at the back and Huang’s precision at the front court, the defending champions dominated the game from the start. Their opponents, the fourth seeds who had previously defeated them in Singapore, were unable to gain a foothold in the match, settling for the distinction of being Thailand’s first World Championship finalists.

Reflecting on their victory, Huang expressed their happiness and credited their teammates, Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping, for providing valuable feedback after their loss to the Thai pair in the semi-finals. Zheng also acknowledged the mental toughness required to maintain their winning streak, noting that despite the seemingly easy straight-game victories, each match presented its own challenges.

On the other hand, the silver medalists recognized the superiority of their Chinese opponents and acknowledged the need to work harder to match their level of play. Taerattanachai remarked on the strength and speed of the champions, while Puavaranukroh considered the experience of reaching the World Championship final as a valuable learning opportunity to further improve their skills.
