News | BWF World Championships

Former Olympic champion Li Xuerui has a chance to compete in the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017, as she is second on the latest Women’s Singles reserves list.

Li Xuerui’s Comeback

Li Xuerui, a former No.1 player from China and a two-time World Championships runner-up, has been out of action since sustaining a serious injury at the Rio Olympics in August last year. Ranked No.24 on the qualifying date, Li is fourth among the Chinese players, behind Sun Yu, He Bingjiao, and Chen Yufei. The Chinese Badminton Association has accepted her invitation, and she will secure a spot in Glasgow only if there are two withdrawals of qualified entries before the draw on August 9, 2017.

Reserves List and Qualification

Each member association can field a maximum of four players/pairs in each category. Sayaka Sato from Japan, as the first reserve, hopes to join her three compatriots, Akane Yamaguchi, Nozomo Okuhara, and Aya Ohori. In Women’s Doubles, Sayaka Hirota and Yuki Fukushima, the first reserves in the qualifying list, are also in contention to participate. Their compatriots, Hirota and Fukushima, winners of the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open, can join their three fellow Japanese pairs if there is a withdrawal before the draw. China’s Bao Yixin and Yu Xiaohan are also in the running as the second-ranked reserves.
