Three months after her second career-threatening injury, Sayaka Hirota made a tense comeback to the competition. Hirota and Yuki Fukushima had a tough match against Annie Xu and Kerry Xu from the USA at the YONEX French Open 2024. With Hirota struggling with her movement, Fukushima had to cover a lot of ground. Their opponents tried to take advantage of Hirota’s condition, but the Japanese pair fought back and eventually emerged victorious.

In December of last year, Hirota suffered a similar injury to her right knee during the semifinals of the Syed Modi International. This injury had also affected their chances at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Despite the challenges, Hirota was determined to qualify for Paris 2024.

“It’s been three months since we played any competition, so of course I was very nervous,” said Hirota. “I knew I would be targeted, so I had to move better. Fukushima covered everything, especially at the back.”

Interestingly, Hirota’s familiarity with the injury gave her confidence to continue without surgery. She made the decision to postpone surgery until after the Olympics, believing she could make a comeback within a few months.

Her partner, Fukushima, described it as a period of mixed emotions. “I was wondering about a lot of things. I was worried about her condition, so I wasn’t really sure what to think; it was a difficult feeling.”
