Li Xuerui Secures Victory at the 2018 Yonex US Open

Yonex US Open

Li Xuerui continues to make a remarkable comeback in her badminton career, as she emerged victorious at the 2018 Yonex US Open, defeating home player Beiwen Zhang. This win marks a significant milestone for Li since her return from an injury suffered during the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Li’s first comeback event in April of this year saw her clinching the title at the Lingshui China Masters, a HSBC World Tour Super 100 event. However, she faced disappointment during China’s TOTAL BWF Uber Cup campaign in May. The US Open, a World Tour Super 300 event, delivered 7000 points to Li for her title victory.

In Fullerton, Li fought tenaciously against Zhang. Although she suffered a narrow loss in the opening game, Li made a stunning comeback, ultimately triumphing over the India Open champion with a score of 24-26, 21-15, 21-11 in an hour of intense play.

Zhang, the top seed, had previously defeated defending champion Aya Ohori from Japan in a closely contested semi-final match, with a score of 20-22, 23-21, 21-13. Meanwhile, Li secured her place in the final by besting last year’s runner-up Michelle Li from Canada, with a score of 21-17, 21-17. Li had to face tough opponents throughout the tournament, including the second seed Sayaka Sato from Japan in the second round and Korea’s Kim Hyo Min in the quarter-finals.

In the men’s singles category, Korea’s Lee Dong Keun claimed his most significant title since winning at the Jeonju Victor Korea Masters in November 2015. He successfully overcame the challenge from Dutchman Mark Caljouw, with a score of 14-21, 21-17, 21-16. Lee’s journey to the final included a thrilling victory over the top seed Lin Dan from China in the opening round. Additionally, he faced a challenging semi-final against Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab, ultimately prevailing with a score of 21-19, 15-21, 21-18. Caljouw’s path to the final involved a win against India’s Ajay Jayaram, with a score of 21-13, 23-21.

China added another gold to their tally when Tang Jinhua and Yu Xiaohan outplayed Korea’s Kim Hye Jeong and Kim So Yeong in the Women’s Doubles final, with a score of 18-21, 21-13, 21-15. The top seeds, Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao, were defeated in the semi-finals by Kim and Kim, with a score of 17-21, 21-16, 21-17.

Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying secured victory in the Mixed Doubles category, defeating Germany’s Marvin Emil Seidel and Linda Efler with a score of 21-19, 21-15.

In the Men’s Doubles category, the unseeded Chinese duo of Ou Xuanyi and Ren Xiangyu triumphed over fourth seeds Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel from Germany. They continued their successful run by defeating Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Kim Won Ho in the final, with a score of 21-17, 21-14.
