Exciting Debut of Para badminton at Lima 2019

Para badminton made its thrilling debut at the Parapan American Games in Lima 2019, showcasing exhilarating matches and fantastic performances. Athletes from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, the United States, Venezuela, and host country Peru all secured their first victories at this prestigious event.

The First Victories

The day kicked off with a remarkable win by Pan American champion Pilar Jauregui (PER) in Group A of the WH2 category, where she faced tough competition from Maydelin Soriano (CUB) and Amy Burnett (USA). Tomorrow, Jauregui will go head-to-head with Soriano to determine the group winner and move forward in the tournament.

In the WH2 category, Yuka Chokyu defeated Daniele Souza in group B, who also secured a victory against Catalina Jimeno from Chile. On the male side, Brazilian duos Marcelo Alves/Julio Cesar Godoy and Rodolfo Cano/Romulo Soares emerged victorious in Group A and B respectively. Jaime Aranguiz/Constancio Cancino (CHI) also achieved a victory against Joaquin Palma/Pablo Pimentel (MEX) in Group A, while Bernard Lapointe/Richard Peter (CAN) replicated the feat against Roberth Fajardo/Ronald Miranda (PER).

In SL3, Leonardo Zuffo (BRA) began with a win against William Roussy (CAN) in Group B, while Pedro Pablo de Vinatea also triumphed against Renan Rosso (BRA) and Rolando Bello (CUB). Tomorrow, De Vinatea and Bello will face off to determine the winner of Group A, and Zuffo will compete against Wulnims Franco (VEN).

Stellar Performances

Raul Anguiano, a five-time Pan Am champion, secured a victory in his first match against Pablo Cesar Cueto (PER), who won his second match against Eric Johnson (USA). In Group B, Rogerio De Oliveira (BRA) secured a spot in the semifinals after defeating Pascal Lapointe (CAN) and Anthony Alvarado (VEN).

Venezuela’s Kleiber Mijares also claimed his first victory in Lima 2019 by defeating Esteban Juarez (PER) and will face Eduardo Oliveira (BRA) in Group A. Meanwhile, Colombia celebrated their first win with Jean Paul Ortiz, who recovered from an initial loss to Ricardo Cavalli (BRA) and defeated Alberto Cadenillas (PER) in a thrilling match.

Women’s Competition

In the SU5 category, Mikaela Almeida (BRA), Olivia Meier (CAN), Laura Yanes (CUB), and Jenny Ventocilla showcased incredible talent and shared the points. They will continue to compete using the Round Robin system.

Canadian duo Pascal Lapointe and Olivia Meier dominated the XD SL3-SU5 competition with two victories on the first day. Rolando Bello/Laura Yanes (CUB) and Ricardo Cavalli/Abinaecia Da Silva also secured a win each and will strive to accumulate more points in the upcoming matches.

The Road to Glory

In the SS6 category, Vitor Tavares, Miles Krajewski, Wyatt Lightfoot, and Jesus Salva achieved victories on the first day and will soon determine the semifinal matchups. The Para badminton competition will continue from August 29, concluding with the crowning of the first Parapan Am Games champions on August 31 and September 1.
