As we all remember, Tokyo 2020 was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. Many athletes experienced a decline in performance due to quarantine measures and training restrictions. Pilar had to adapt and find alternatives for physical training at home, with limited space but boundless energy, to keep up with her dream of qualifying for the Paralympics.
However, the pandemic was not the only challenge Pilar faced on her journey. Just when she was one event away from officially closing the qualification period, she had to navigate an infection that forced her to pause her preparation once again. It was a tough time for her, filled with uncertainty about whether she would be able to compete again. But through patience and resilience, she made a successful recovery and returned to competition.
Currently ranked 5th in the WH2 category, Pilar is now focused on accumulating points in the world ranking as she aims for qualification to the 2022 World Championship and the 2023 Parapan American Games. Apart from her personal goals, she is also passionate about promoting the sport to others. Pilar, together with the Bent But Not Broken Association (bbnb), is actively involved in promoting para sports in Peru. Their activities include tennis, marathon, surfing, women’s wheelchair basketball, and soon, Para badminton.
The Association’s vision is to enable everyone to participate in sports without any barriers. They aim to inspire and encourage more young people to join these sports. The establishment of a ‘bbnb’ in Cuzco with a women’s basketball team is just the beginning, and they hope to see further growth in the future.
