BWF World Tour Finals: Men’s Singles Contenders

With just a few tournaments remaining in the HSBC Race To Guangzhou 2019, let’s take a look at the top contenders in men’s singles for the season-ending HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in December.

Current Top 8

  1. Kento Momota (JPN) – 79,540 pts
  2. Chou Tien Chen (TPE) – 71,020 pts
  3. Jonatan Christie (INA) – 68,300 pts
  4. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (INA) – 62,890 pts
  5. Wang Tzu Wei (TPE) – 60,910 pts
  6. Viktor Axelsen (DEN) – 58,310 pts
  7. Lee Zii Jia (MAS) – 57,700 pts
  8. Lin Dan (CHN) – 56,020 pts

Japan’s Kento Momota has been nothing short of dominant this season, with five World Tour victories. He has even won two Super 1000 titles – the YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships 2019 and VICTOR China Open 2019.

“I’m very happy that I’ve proved my ability by winning my second Super 1000 title and the World Championships,” said Momota after his win in Changzhou.

Momota has already secured his place in Guangzhou after his victory in Basel in August.

Another player to watch out for is Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen. He clinched his first Super 1000 title at the BLIBLI Indonesia Open 2019 and has since followed it up with wins in Thailand and Chinese Taipei. He also finished as the runner-up in Korea recently.

Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei is a surprise contender in fifth position. He has had a consistent season so far, participating in 18 out of 19 tournaments in 2019. Wang’s semifinal efforts in Australia, Canada, and Korea have earned him valuable points.

Two Indonesians, Jonatan Christie and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, are also in the running to qualify for the Tour Finals. Along with Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia and Wang Tzu Wei, they are the only athletes in the Top 8 without a title in 2019.

Sitting just outside the top eight are China’s Chen Long and Denmark’s Anders Antonsen. Antonsen’s absence from the finals would be a surprise as this has been his best season so far. He has secured one victory and two runner-up finishes, along with impressive performances at the European Championships (gold) and World Championships (silver).

Defending champion Shi Yu Qi is unlikely to feature in Guangzhou, as he currently ranks 24th. He made his return from injury at the China Open last month after undergoing ankle ligament surgery in July.

The next stop on the World Tour is the DANISA Denmark Open 2019. You can find the draw here.
