The Badminton World Federation (BWF) congratulates Dagmawit Girmay Berhane on her recent election as an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member. This is a significant achievement that highlights Berhane’s valuable contributions to sports administration in her home country of Ethiopia, Africa, and internationally.

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer expresses his pride, stating, “As a member of our badminton family, we are all very proud that you have been elected.” He emphasizes that becoming an IOC member is a testament to Berhane’s dedication to her work in Ethiopia, the African continent, and her involvement in two IOC Commissions – the IOC Women and Sport Commission and the Coordination Commission of the 2nd Youth Olympic Games – Nanjing 2014.

Berhane currently serves as the continental vice-president for Africa on the BWF Council. Her election as an IOC member, alongside eight other individuals, has brought the total number of IOC members to 111. These members consist of active athletes or representatives of International Federations (IFs) and National Olympic Committees (NOCs). It’s worth mentioning that Berhane previously served as an IOC member during her tenure as Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Ethiopia.

As a member of the BWF Council, Berhane is one of six women who hold positions of influence within the organization. She also holds various other sports-administration roles, including President of the Ethiopian Badminton Federation, Executive Member of the Badminton Confederation of Africa, and Executive Board Member of the Association of National Olympic Committees.
