China Continues to Dominate Women’s Doubles in BWF World Superseries Finals

China has been dominating the Women’s Doubles category in badminton this year, and they are poised to win their third consecutive BWF World Superseries Finals title. The competition is fierce between the Olympic gold medallists, Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei, and the resurgent Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli, who are the two-time defending champions.

Both Chinese pairs are the top contenders in this discipline at the CR Land-sponsored season-ender, which is part of the OSIM BWF World Superseries tour. They have won the major titles this year, making it unlikely for any of the other six pairs to surpass them.

Looking at the statistics, these pairs have participated in seven out of the 12 Superseries events this year and have won six of them. They also emerged victorious in the Asian Championships and the Olympics. The only setback they faced was in the semi-finals of the Denmark Open, where Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei were defeated. Overall, China has been dominant in Women’s Doubles, winning ten out of the 12 Superseries events in 2012.

If everything goes according to plan, either Yu Yang/Wang Xiaoli or Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei will emerge as the winners of the World Superseries Finals. Although Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli hold a strong 8-3 head-to-head record against their compatriots, Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei have won two of their last three encounters. Their most recent clash, in the Hong Kong Open final in late November, was a thrilling three-game affair.

Zhao Yunlei has had a remarkable year, winning two Olympic gold medals in Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Her partnership with Tian Qing has yielded three Superseries titles, including the prestigious All England tournament, as well as gold medals at the Asian Championships and Olympics. They have been the most dominant Women’s Doubles pair this year and are the favorites to prevent Yu Yang/Wang Xiaoli from winning a third consecutive World Superseries Finals title.

There are a few teams that could potentially upset the Chinese pairs. The Danish duo of Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter-Juhl, as well as the two Japanese pairs of Shizuka Matsuo/Mami Naito and Ayaka Takahashi/Misaki Matsutomo, have shown promise. The Danes secured a Superseries victory in Malaysia and caused an upset at the Olympics by defeating second seeds Tian/Zhao in their group match. However, their inconsistency and losses to lower-ranked opponents may hinder their chances. The Japanese pairs, on the other hand, have had impressive performances throughout the year. Ayaka Takahashi/Misaki Matsutomo defeated the top seeds and Olympic champions Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei in the Denmark Open semi-finals and have won three tournaments.

The Korean pair of Eom Hye Won/Jang Ye Na had a solid late season, winning the Macau Open GPG and reaching the semi-finals in multiple tournaments. In the Swiss Open, they had a close match against the world No. 2 pair Bao Yixin/Zhong Qianxin, which could give them confidence in facing their Chinese rivals in the future.

Hong Kong’s Poon Lok Yan/Tse Ying Suet were fortunate to qualify for the World Superseries Finals after the Japanese team of Miyuki Maeda/Satoko Suetsuna declined to participate. They were surprise winners at the Japan Open Superseries but had average performances throughout the year. Similarly, the Thai duo of Kunchala Voravichitchaikul/Duanganong Aroonkesorn had their best performance at home, reaching the semi-finals of the Thailand Open GPG.
