In an exciting turn of events at the OUE Singapore Open 2016, the world No.1 Chen Long was defeated by Ng Ka Long, also known as Angus, in straight games. This victory has halted Chen Long’s bid to reach his first World Superseries semi-final.
Ng Ka Long, a doubles-turned-singles player, emerged victorious with a score of 21-14, 21-18. This surprising outcome left both the spectators and Ng himself amazed. Reflecting on his win, Ng said, “This is beyond my expectations. I stuck to my strategy and it worked. My aim was to quickly move him to the back of the court with my first shot and take advantage of the time to move the shot back to the front court.”

The second game saw Chen Long start with a commanding lead of 12-4. However, Ng remained calm and steadily worked his way back into the game, taking advantage of some unusual lapses from Chen. Ng found himself ahead 17-14 after reeling off ten unanswered points. Chen Long struggled with shot selection and made several errors, leading to his defeat. Despite a valiant effort towards the end, Chen Long couldn’t secure a victory.

Reflecting on his performance, Chen Long admitted, “I thought I was going to win the second game as I was well ahead of him. I made some errors in judgment.”
Ng Ka Long will now face Korea’s Son Wan Ho in the semi-finals, while Lin Dan will take on veteran Indonesian player Sony Dwi Kuncoro.
In the Women’s Singles category, the top seed Carolina Marin faced a tough defeat at the hands of Akane Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi, who came from a game down, defeated Marin in a thrilling match lasting 71 minutes. Despite Marin’s comeback in the third game, Yamaguchi raised her level of play and secured the victory, much to the delight of Japanese spectators.

Yamaguchi will now face Ratchanok Intanon, who is aiming for her third World Superseries title in three weeks. In an all-Thai contest, Ratchanok overcame her teammate Porntip Buranaprasertsuk. The other Women’s Singles finalist will be defending champion Sun Yu, who will face He Bingjiao from China.
The Men’s Doubles category saw some surprises as World champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan were defeated by Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen of China. Additionally, No.3 seeds Chai Biao/Hong Wei also suffered a loss. The Chinese pair Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen will now face Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda of Japan in the semi-finals. Korea’s Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong will take on Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan from China in the other semi-final.
The Women’s Doubles semi-finals will feature top seeds Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi of Japan against China’s Olympic gold medallists Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii will compete against Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan of Korea.
In Mixed Doubles, Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun/Kim Ha Na saved a match point to secure a win against Liu Yuchen/Tang Jinhua of China. They will face top seeds Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia in the semi-finals. Xu Chen/Ma Jin, also from China, will take on Wang Yilyu/Chen Qingchen.
