BWF News

China’s Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen have made an impressive jump in the BWF World Rankings after their Men’s Doubles victory at the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2018.

A Successful Performance

Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen, the Chinese pair, showed their skill and determination in Nanjing, earning 13,000 points from their victory. This achievement has propelled them three spots up in the rankings, now sitting at an impressive second place. They are, however, still over 25,000 points behind the top-ranked Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia.

The Indonesians had a successful season, winning four tournaments. However, despite their strong performance, they fell in the quarter-finals of the Worlds. They currently hold the top spot with 102,683 points.

Rise of Contenders

Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda of Japan, who were runners-up in the World Championships, have also benefited from their performance in Nanjing. The 11,000 points they earned helped them climb up a place to No.3 in the rankings.

Additionally, Chen Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei made a significant move up the rankings. Their semi-final finish in Nanjing gave them 9,200 points, pushing them five places up to No.10. Malaysia’s Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong also made progress, rising three spots to No.11, even though they lost to the eventual champions in the third round.

Women’s Doubles Drama

In the Women’s Doubles final, Yuki Fukushima/Sayaka Hirota, who were runners-up, experienced a mixture of disappointment and consolation. Despite blowing two match points, they managed to climb up a spot to No.1 in the rankings, just ahead of their compatriots Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi.

Last year’s champions Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan of China slipped two spots to No.3, while the pair that beat them in the quarter-finals, Indonesia’s Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu, climbed two spots to No.4. The bronze medallists, Shiho Tanaka/Koharu Yonemoto from Japan, maintained their position at No.5.

Dominance in Japan

The World champions Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara remained at No.10 in the rankings despite earning 13,000 points. It is no surprise that Japan dominates the top 15, with six pairs in the rankings.

Mixed Doubles Triumph

China’s dominance continued in the Mixed Doubles category at the World Championships. The top two Chinese pairs made it to the final, with Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong emerging as the newly-crowned champions. Their victory propelled them to the top spot in the rankings, overtaking the runners-up Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping, who now sit at No.2.

Olympic champions Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia, who did not compete in Nanjing, slipped two spots to No.3.

Notable Gainers

Among the rankings, there were several notable gainers. China’s Zhang Nan/Li Yinhui, who reached the semi-finals at the Worlds, climbed four spots to No.12. Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai also made a significant jump, progressing four places to reach No.15.
