BWF News: African Para-Badminton Legacy Project Set to Transform the Sport

Welcome to Carnegiecentre! Today, we are excited to share news about the recent African Para-Badminton Legacy Project, which has the potential to revolutionize the sport across the continent. This three-day program, co-funded by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and AGITOS Foundation, in partnership with Badminton Africa Confederation and Uganda Badminton Association, aimed to provide comprehensive training and workshops for players, coaches, administrators, and national classifiers.

Building Bridges and Fostering Camaraderie

The African Para-Badminton Legacy Project brought together about 40 participants from Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda. The project coordinator, Simon Mugabe, was thrilled to witness the camaraderie among the group and their enthusiasm for this transformative initiative.

Through this project, participants realized that having a disability does not limit their ability to play and enjoy sports. The players, especially those new to badminton, found the program to be an eye-opener, as they discovered that all sport classes were represented, providing a level playing field for everyone.

Empowering Through Education and Training

The program included training sessions for players, workshops for coaches and administrators, and courses for national classifiers. Ian Bridge, one of the tutors, was impressed by the positive attitude displayed by the players throughout the three days. He noted their ability to absorb information quickly and apply it on the court, leading to significant improvement in their skills.

Coaches had the opportunity to learn about adapting training methods to meet the specific needs of athletes with different impairments. Practical demonstrations were conducted, focusing on addressing issues faced by short-stature players. The program’s emphasis on education and training aims to empower coaches and administrators to develop para-badminton in their respective countries and regions.

Recognizing the Role of Entourage

Simon Mugabe emphasized the crucial role of entourage in the future success of para-badminton in Africa. By implementing the knowledge gained from the African Para-Badminton Legacy Project, administrators and coaches can inspire and attract more individuals to participate in para-badminton activities. This success story will encourage other countries to join the movement, as they witness the positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities.

Excitement Builds for the Uganda Para-Badminton International 2018

As the participants from the African Para-Badminton Legacy Project gear up for the upcoming Uganda Para-Badminton International tournament, the excitement is palpable. Asiya Sururu Mohamed, a wheelchair athlete from Kenya, has chosen badminton as her new sporting challenge. On her 26th birthday, she eagerly anticipates her first competitive match, ready to showcase the skills she has learned during the program.

The African Para-Badminton Legacy Project has not only prepared the participants for the tournament but has also classified 32 athletes who will compete in their first event. The program’s impact is already being felt, and the stage is set for an incredible display of talent and dedication.
