Badminton: A Passionate Journey of Growth and Development

JESÚS GUTIÉRREZ LÓPEZ, Badminton Federation of Mexico

Childhood Days

I have always been passionate about sports, and my childhood in Aguascalientes, Mexico, was filled with fun and camaraderie. Soccer was my primary sport, but I also enjoyed playing badminton with my brothers during our leisure time. It wasn’t until my second semester at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes, where I was studying physical culture and sports, that I had my first taste of organized badminton. I was invited to be a line judge at the BWF World Junior Championships 2010 in Guadalajara, and that experience left me completely captivated. Witnessing top players like Viktor Axelsen and Carolina Marin in action was an incredible stroke of luck that forever changed my life.

Early Impressions

The speed, strength, and passion displayed by the players at the BWF World Junior Championships took me by surprise. From that moment on, badminton became an integral part of my daily life. I began my journey as an umpire and later took on roles as a referee and a coach. Simultaneously, I started working with the badminton association of the state of Aguascalientes, dedicating my efforts to the sport’s development.

Memorable Moments

Participating in prestigious events like the Pan American Games, BWF World Junior Championships, and various international and national championships has provided me with unforgettable experiences. I have had the privilege of meeting Olympic and high-performance athletes, and I have connected with badminton enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. These encounters and interactions have shaped me as an individual and have strengthened my love for the sport.

What Badminton Means

Badminton is not just a sport for me; it is an integral part of who I am. I work as a badminton teacher, coach, and referee. Most of my closest friends are involved in badminton, and even my little nephews have started practicing the sport. In essence, every aspect of my life revolves around badminton. The sheer swiftness of the shuttlecock makes it one of the most visually captivating sports, and its accessibility allows people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy it.

Developing Badminton in the Community

Our journey in developing badminton in the community began with the implementation of Shuttle Time courses, targeting physical education teachers. Over time, we achieved gold accreditation for the Shuttle Time university course at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. This has played a vital role in expanding the sport by establishing more badminton clubs and introducing the sport to other municipalities within our state. Additionally, we have invested in improving infrastructure, acquiring better equipment and mats to support the development of our players at national and international levels.

The Influence of Shuttle Time

Shuttle Time has been instrumental in nurturing the badminton community in Aguascalientes. It has provided us with a standardized approach to teaching badminton, enabling us to develop coaches, players, and technical officials. Moreover, it has created more employment opportunities for individuals passionate about badminton. Despite its complexities in technique and motor skills, badminton can be taught in a fun and engaging manner, thanks to the correct methods and guidance.
