Pan Am Champion and with a large following both in our region and around the world, Michelle Li is currently ranked number 13 in the World Ranking. Over the years, she has decided to compete at the highest level of world badminton, which has resulted in significant success after putting in a tremendous amount of effort.
Canada’s star player, Li, reached her best position in the World Ranking in 2014, following victories in various tournaments across the globe. However, her journey in high-level badminton has not been an easy one.

“I think it’s tough because I never had someone to guide me. It was more like me trying to figure things out on my own. Unlike some Asian players who have a whole team supporting them, including coaches and physiotherapists, as Pan American players, we don’t have those same resources. I can only believe in what I can do and try not to think about the other teams. It’s not an easy road, but I don’t think it’s impossible,” Li reflects.

Despite the challenges, Michelle has decided to take her career to the next level, just like many other athletes who are deeply passionate about their sport, but not all of them are able to realize their dreams.
“My goals were always established at the world stage. I played in Pan Am tournaments when I was younger, so I have that experience. After that, I had to push myself to improve and compete against the best players. If I want to be one of the best, I have to take this step,” Michelle adds.
Michelle has successfully competed on the grandest stages of world badminton, representing both her country and our region. This year holds immense importance for her, as it marks the beginning of the qualification process for a new challenge, Tokyo 2020. Additionally, she hopes to secure a new Pan-American medal in the upcoming Pan Am Games Lima 2019.

“This year will be filled with numerous tournaments, and the Pan American Games is definitely one that I want to win. I have played in Lima several times before, so I am confident that I can perform exceptionally well this time,” Michelle says.
Undoubtedly, Michelle serves as an inspiration for many athletes in our region who aspire to follow in her footsteps and excel in our beloved sport. The experience she has gained over the years, along with the consistent results she achieves in every tournament, enables her to offer valuable advice:
“Work hard, believe in your talent, because fear can hinder you from achieving great things. I know that many people get nervous before a game, but I firmly believe that your faith should always be greater than your fear.”
