Badminton Pan America

Barbados Coach, Shakeira Waithe, is a Physical Education teacher with a strong passion for badminton. She attended the BWF Coaches Conference 2018 and the Coach Level 3 Course last year in our region. Shakeira is determined to continue developing the sport in her country and has ambitious dreams for its future.

Shakeira, like many other women involved in badminton, began as a player and decided to become a coach as a way to give back to the sport that had given her so much. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I started playing when I was 7 years old and eventually made the decision to become a coach. It’s my way of giving back to this sport that has brought me so much joy. As you become more involved in badminton, it’s natural to think about how you can contribute.”

For every player-turned-coach, the transition is unique. However, the common thread is the desire to reinforce their decisions and commit to new projects. Shakeira, being a physical education teacher, found the transition to coaching relatively smooth. “Teaching others has always come easy to me,” she explained. “So, deciding to step away from being an athlete and embracing the role of a coach wasn’t a difficult choice.”

Being at the forefront of coaching requires a deep understanding of the sport and its evolution. Shakeira recognizes the significance of continuous training and actively seeks opportunities to enhance her knowledge in order to equip her athletes with the best tools. “It’s crucial to keep up with the changes in sports and stay prepared. Athletes deserve the most updated knowledge and training,” she emphasized.

While Shakeira’s personal goals are intertwined with her coaching role, she also has a broader vision for badminton in Barbados. “My goal is to foster the growth of badminton in my country, involving more people and, perhaps, producing badminton players who can compete internationally. Ultimately, my biggest dream is to participate in the Olympic Games.”

In collaboration with BWF and BPAC, last November, a Coach Level 3 Pilot course was conducted in our region. Shakeira and other coaches participated in this course, which challenged them to adopt new training methodologies. Reflecting on the experience, Shakeira shared, “The course was both enriching and challenging. We received a wealth of information in a short span of time. Some of it reinforced what I already knew, while other aspects pushed me to implement new strategies. We are already implementing several techniques that we learned, but we need to further refine our structure to continue improving.”
