The HULIC DAIHATSU Japan Para Badminton International 2019, serving as the official Tokyo 2020 Test Event, provided an unparalleled opportunity for players, officials, and organizers to assess the venue for the badminton competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in September next year. The Yoyogi National Stadium, which has undergone significant renovations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, welcomed Para badminton players with open arms.

BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund expressed his excitement for the inclusion of Para badminton in the Paralympic sports program at Tokyo 2020. Japan, renowned for hosting top-notch and prestigious tournaments, is the perfect setting for the sport’s Paralympic debut. The familiarity of the Yoyogi National Stadium, a long-standing venue for badminton, further adds to the excitement surrounding the event.

The reimagined stadium, originally built for the 1964 Summer Olympics, now boasts modernized facilities, specifically tailored to cater to Para athletes. With its unique suspension roof design, the arena has gained international acclaim. The gymnasium’s spaciousness and towering ceiling provide a fresh experience for many Para badminton players, creating a sense of grandeur akin to the real Paralympics.

Japanese player Sarina Satomi, thrilled to play in such a prestigious venue, described the experience as comparable to the Paralympics themselves. The Yoyogi National Stadium will host not only Para badminton but also wheelchair rugby, showcasing its versatility as a sporting venue.
