Next month, the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2013 will be held in Dortmund, Germany. This event has broken records with 248 entries from 39 countries, double the number from the last championships in 2011.

Participation has also increased by 30% since the previous championships, with countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Ghana, and Uganda sending players for the first time ever. This truly demonstrates the growing interest in para-badminton worldwide.

Competitors from all five continental confederations will compete in six classes, including two wheelchair classes, three standing classes, and one short stature class. This makes the tournament the most diverse and inclusive para-badminton event to date.

Paul Kurzo, the BWF Vice-President Para-Badminton, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This will be our best Para-Badminton World Championships yet.” He also highlighted the significance of promoting para-badminton within the disabled community and the campaign for its inclusion in the 2020 Paralympic Games.

To ensure fairness, para-badminton players are classified into groups based on their impairment level. There are six sport classes: WH 1 and WH 2 for wheelchair players, SL 3 and SL 4 for standing players, SU 5 for players with upper limb impairments, and SS 6 for players with a short stature.

The classification process ensures that athletes with different impairments can compete on a level playing field. Medical examinations and badminton-specific activities are used to determine each player’s sport performance.
