The Badminton World Federation (BWF) expresses its deepest condolences to the government and people of Thailand on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The BWF also extends its sympathies to the Badminton Association of Thailand, who not only mourn their king but also their greatest patron.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej was an exceptional supporter of badminton, dedicating over 50 years of his life to the sport. In recognition of his lifetime contributions, he was honored with the inaugural BWF President’s Medal in November 2012. Dr. Kang Young Joong, then BWF President, presented the award to the Crown Prince at the Royal Palace.

During the award ceremony, Dr. Kang highlighted His Majesty’s exceptional contribution to badminton, both globally and in Thailand. Additionally, he expressed sincere appreciation for the king’s efforts in promoting the sport. His influence and patronage played an instrumental role in the success of many Thai players, who have become elite athletes on the world stage.
The BWF President, Poul-Erik Høyer, paid tribute to the late monarch as an inspirational leader and a role model for his country and the badminton community. The BWF has always cherished the special relationship with the royal family of Thailand and deeply appreciates the immense support provided to the sport.
