The Li Ning China Masters kicked off with a strong Chinese presence, led by hometown favorite Chen Long. Although Viktor Axelsen showed promise by winning the first game, Chen’s power and speed ultimately secured him a 20-22 21-7 21-8 victory. Meanwhile, Axelsen’s senior teammate Jan O Jorgensen suffered an upset, losing a battle against Hao Jen Hsu from Taipei. Chen Jin, another Chinese player, had an easy win over India’s Anand Pawar. Other Chinese contenders, including Du Pengyu, Wang Zhengming, and Zhou Wenlong, also advanced to the second round.
However, not all matches went in China’s favor. In Women’s Singles, former World Champion Wang Lin, Chen Xiao Jia, Yao Xue, and Gao Huan faced defeats. Busanan Ongbumrungpan outlasted Chen Xiao Jia in the longest Women’s Singles match of the day. Gao Huan, who had successfully navigated through qualifying rounds, was stopped by India’s Parupalli Kashyap in a close battle. India had a strong showing overall, with players like Guru Sai Dutt, Ajay Jayaram, Sourabh Verma, and PV Sindhu progressing to the next round.
