The Badminton World Federation (BWF) recently held its 83rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in a historic first hybrid format. Attended by 132 Member Associations, the AGM took place both in person in Bangkok, Thailand, and virtually.

During the meeting, the BWF discussed and voted on several proposals with the aim of maintaining high governance standards. BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer expressed his appreciation for the badminton community’s unwavering commitment to the sport over the past few years.

Høyer stated, “The decisions made during the AGM and the discussions in the Members’ Forum demonstrate that the badminton community is fully engaged in the best interests of the sport. It shows that we have not backed down from the challenges posed by COVID-19.” He further added, “Over the past 18 months, we have made significant progress in optimizing exposure for the sport and supporting the livelihoods of players and industry participants as we emerge from the pandemic.”

The BWF also presented its Audited Financial Statements, which revealed a budget surplus of US$19.71 million for 2021. This surpassed the budgeted deficit and showcased the organization’s ability to adapt and generate revenue despite the challenging circumstances. BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund highlighted the major successes that contributed to the positive financial result.

Lund noted, “I am pleased to report that the BWF has achieved a more stable financial situation compared to a year ago. Our strong revenue generation through major tournaments, coupled with conservative budgeting, has allowed us to recover our financial position.” He further stated that the BWF Council continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation for prudent financial planning and explores opportunities to invest in the sport’s future development.

In addition to the financial updates, the Membership voted on a Council proposal to appoint Torsten Berg from Denmark and Dato’ Wira Lim Teong Kiat of Malaysia as new BWF Honorary Life Vice Presidents. President Høyer acknowledged their significant contributions to the sport and expressed his gratitude for their dedication.

The next BWF AGM is scheduled to take place in Suzhou, China, in May 2023, coinciding with the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2023.
